New data from recruiter Acorn Recruitment has revealed that the number of people applying for temporary jobs in the North* throughout July and August has risen by more than a third – 35% - year on year.
On average, 5.9 people applied for each temporary post available across the North through Acorn Recruitment between July 1st and August 26th 2019, compared with 4.2 people in the same period in 2018 and 3.8 people in 2017. That’s an increase of 35% between 2019 and 2017.
Manufacturing retains its place as the sector posting the most temporary summer jobs across the North for the past three years running. Supply and demand for seasonal staff in the logistics industry also near on doubled within the same period, with 6.2 candidates applying per job and more than twice the number of roles advertised in 2019, compared to 3.3 candidates on average in 2017.
Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Manufacturing and Logistics otherwise remain the strongest industries regionally in terms of attracting the highest average number of applicants per role, with all three retaining their place in the top five sectors for the North for the past three years running.
In 2019, the top sectors for applicants per post were:
- Fast Moving Consumer Goods (7.6 applicants per job on average)
- Manufacturing (7.4 applicants per job on average)
- Logistics (6.2 applicants per job on average)
- Social Care (5.5 applicants per job on average)
- Call Centre (5.3 applicants per job on average)
Compared with these sectors in 2017:
- HR and Personnel (27.3 applicants per job on average)
- Administration (15.7 applicants per job on average)
- Fast Moving Consumer Goods (4.6 applicants per job on average)
- Manufacturing and Production (3.7 applicants per job on average)
- Logistics (3.3 applicants per job on average)
Nationally, there was a 59% year on year increase in people applying for temporary jobs in July and August with Acorn Recruitment this year, with manufacturing topping the number of jobs available UK-wide as it did in the North.
On average, 4.7 people applied for each temporary post available between July 1st and August 26th 2019, compared with 3.2 people in the same period in 2018 and 3 people in 2017.
The south west meanwhile saw an increase of 3.8% in the number of applicants between 2019 and 2017 comparatively - with an average of 2.5 people going for each temporary job opening in 2019, 1.7 in 2018 and 2.6 people in 2017.
Karen Sharpin, Senior Operations Director at Acorn Recruitment said: “Traditionally July and August are seen as slightly quieter months, when we see demand slowing down and fewer people actively looking for work.
“The figures here show that despite concerns among employers about availability of people there is still an appetite among some temporary workers to switch between temporary jobs and change employers, not least in the North.”

“In the North both employers and those seeking opportunities for work can take heart, therefore, that according to our figures the labour market within the region’s most established industries appears to be as robust as ever, despite the current climate.”
