In celebration of 20 years' year-on-year growth, Blackburn-based BEC (Systems Integration) Ltd., the UK-based supplier of data capture solutions for supply chain logistics and manufacturing, held a special Technology Day at the Land Rover Experience Centre in Solihull on 20th May, attended by customers, prospects and partners.

After a welcome and introduction to the event by Phillip Jarrett, BEC's director of sales & marketing, Simon Jones, business development manager at Vocollect Solutions by Honeywell, gave a presentation outlining some of the core benefits of Vocollect's Voice-directed picking solutions. He pointed out how the company's solutions can allow operators to go about their picking tasks in the warehouse in a more fluid and effective manner. Jones explained that this is achieved by giving one instruction at a time, taking data and commands from the WMS and changing these into voice instructions that ensure users receive the next command as they are finishing their previous action. He added that there are also major productivity, accuracy and time management benefits due to Voice being a hands- and eyes-free methodology.

Ebbie Khadem, managing director of Spirit Data Capture, followed with a presentation outlining what Spirit (which celebrates its own 10th anniversary this year) can provide in terms of software solutions that operate outside the four walls. Khadem spoke about Spirit's knowledge of the latest wireless and mobile computing technologies and its total service and support package. He added that Spirit has enjoyed a very fruitful relationship with BEC over the past year and half in terms of finding joint ventures together and helping customers to source the right solutions and services they need for their particular tasks.

Richard Smith, senior sales executive at SOTI, spoke of the importance of mobile device management, and how SOTI can provide the right device management solution for a range of industries, from logistics to utilities. He explained there are many things that can be achieved with device management, including the remote control of a device in the warehouse or out of the field. Smith added that SOTI is a full device management tool, so when the users source a new device they can put the remote control agent on the device and the remote control functionality will push everything to that device; applications, Wi-Fi settings, files etc.

Adrian Lawson, manager, channel sales UK & Ireland at Honeywell Scanning & Mobility, rounded-off the presentations by talking about how users can improve operations in the warehouse or distribution centre and outside the four walls through the use of modern mobile devices and applications connected to a reliable network. He also stressed the importance of Honeywell's channel partner network, including the company's relationship with BEC and Spirit Data Capture.

During the day attendees were able to talk to BEC's partners at their interactive stations at the Land Rover Experience Centre, where a range of products could be demonstrated. Then, in the afternoon, attendees had the opportunity to test drive a brand new 4x4 as well as take a tour of the famous Land Rover factory.

Tony Hampson, managing director at BEC, commented: "The future for BEC really looks bright. We are continuing along our growth path and have also established mutually beneficial partnerships within associated industries, allowing us to further broaden our current product offerings. We are also seeking to build upon our already solid reputation, and are very much looking forward to moving into the next phase of our long-standing history."
