Logistics Simulation 3D technology linked to Keystones live inventory

Logistics Simulation Limited has developed an innovative warehouse 3D simulation programme with real-time inventory tracking in partnership with Keystone Distribution UK.

The technology incorporates a live inventory into a 3D simulation package to allow Keystone - McDonalds UKs exclusive distribution partner to run simulated tests on operational changes using current stock inventory data.

By running the real-time inventory with the 3D simulation we know every item that is coming through the Keystone warehouse in any given day, said Nick Abbott, consultant at Logistics Simulation. The high degree of accuracy that the live inventory lends to our simulations is absolutely vital to Keystone to maintain the high supply chain standards that McDonalds demands.

Logistics Simulations simulation IT programme shows the internal workings of a warehouse operation in 3D, which includes every action of every warehouse operative and the workings of the automated picking system. Every action is programmed into a database to enable simulated tests of any changes in operation practice, such as adjustments to shift patterns, despatch organisation and increases in delivery volumes.

The technology, which tracks sku-by-sku and case-by-case inventory levels, will help Keystone expand its successful McDonalds business. The distributor is preparing to offer the same complete supply chain solution to other foodservice operators from its Hemel Hempstead DC for the first time. A simulation of any additional product flow will be run with Keystones stock inventory to ensure the new business will run smoothly with the existing McDonalds business.

Keystone originally worked with Logistics Simulation while designing the environmentally-friendly Hemel DC, which officially opened in February this year.

Sales and Marketing Director at Keystone Distribution UK, Neville Dobson, said: "With all the improvements in terms of design and technology at the Hemel Hempstead DC, it was critical that we knew that it would operate as planned. Logistics Simulations provided that reassurance with its comprehensive analysis and modelling of the business.

Going forward, we will use the simulation as a base to perform further "what if" scenarios and by linking our live inventory into the simulation we can be sure that we know exactly how our DC will perform before we implement any changes.
