The Humber Institute of Food & Fisheries was delighted to announce that the first group of Logistics Management Foundation Degree students had successfully completed their three-year part-time programme and celebrated in style at the Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education's Graduation day at the Grimsby Town Hall.

This highly successful work-based, Higher Education qualification was designed and launched together with local employers in September 2003 to meet the demand for highly skilled people who know their subject and can apply it in the workplace. As part of the range of provision offered through the Ports & Logistics Centre of Vocational Excellence this programme incorporates the best of modern supply chain and logistics management philosophy and techniques to focus on this vital local industry sector.

One of the successful graduates, thirty seven-year-old Simon Bratton, was awarded the 'Ragged Edge Consulting Student of the Year' prize, donated by Ian Mackenzie who is an active member of the Institute's Logistics Industry Steering Group.  Simon enrolled onto the Foundation Degree in Logistics Management in order to develop and formalise his industry skills. A Key Account Manager for global company, Schenker, Simon is based in Immingham and handles some of the organisation's top accounts worldwide, looking after their supply chain requirements.

Some of the modules he covered on the Foundation Degree in Logistics Management included logistics in context, road freight transport, operations and project management, human resources, and strategic management. Having worked in the sector since 1987, Simon found that he was already familiar with many areas but not in the detail that was covered on the course.

He said: "I have learnt things about all aspects of the supply chain, which will make me better at my job, and have also now got a formal qualification which recognises my skills. My employer has been incredibly supportive and everyone benefits as a result."

He added: "The Humber region is growing in importance internationally for logistics and the supply chain. The fact that the Grimsby Institute is recognising this and running these relevant courses is important to further that development - I will certainly be continuing my studies to a higher level."

The part-time Foundation Degree is designed specifically for people working in industry. Students can continue onto the Degree, and can then undertake a Masters programme in Supply Chain Management at the University of Hull.

HIFF also offers Foundation Degrees in Food Manufacturing Management and World-Class Manufacturing and all three programmes are delivered over 3 years in a combination of seminars, lectures and tutorials with the emphasis on work-based learning.  Above all these qualifications open up opportunities for those already in employment who thought higher education wasn't for them, but want to succeed.  If you are looking for a new challenge and wanting to fast forward your career, contact the Foundation Degree Team on: 01472 311222, ext 188
