Friday 31st March was the official opening day for the new Northern Service Centre for P&G.
To enable P&G to streamline its logistics operations in the North of the UK, it has consolidated its distribution into the Northern Service Centre at Skelmersdale for which P&G have commissioned Swisslog with the build of an automated highbay warehouse.
The Skelmersdale facility deals with P&G's Babycare, Beauty & Femcare, Familycare, Healthcare & Household care product lines. The existing warehouse at the site was a manual picking facility; in adding an automated warehouse P&G has not only increased its storage space, but also streamlined its logistics operation by allowing flexible delivery to its customers. The automated warehouse will directly dispatch full pallet deliveries to customer facilities, as well as replenish the manual picking warehouse.
Swisslog and P&G have been working together since 1986, when Swisslog built an automated highbay warehouse for P&G in London to deal with palletised washing powders. Since then Swisslog have supported this warehouse and modernized it to increase the throughput.
Swisslog's scope of supply at Skelmersdale includes the planning, construction and project management as well as the delivery and implementation of the conveyor and storage systems, including automatic cranes with double deep high-speed storage, racking, a pallet conveyor system with dispatch lanes and Swisslog's Warehouse Control System. The system loads the lorries in drop sequence order, allowing P&G to make transport savings.
"Swisslog have proved to be a reliable business partner, successfully delivering a quality installation under challenging schedule and constructability constraints" says Keith Branwhite, P&G Project Manager at Skelmersdale.
"The key factors in P&G choosing Swisslog to build this warehouse has been the reliability and integration of our software into P&G's corporate systems, along with level and quality of support we have been able to provide over the last 20 years" says Jeff Rees, Sales Manager at Swisslog.
