In the Netherlands the entire household appliances industry relies on the professional trip planning software PTV Intertour. The companies use the software for daily home delivery scheduling and effective planning of their field sales force. It also helps dispatch the goods from the main warehouses to the outlets. One of the Dutch users is BCC, a specialist company in the field of electrical appliances and one of the three major players in the household appliances market. Thanks to PTV Intertour the company has been able to achieve a higher service level whilst considerably reducing the transport costs. Holland-based PTV-ORDIS has been taking care of all PTV customers in the Benelux countries where PTV Intertour has become the leading trip planning software. Over 300 companies are currently using this professional tool. Just to mention a few of them: the Dutch sales chain for household appliances and entertainment electronics de Harense Smid, Scheer en Foppen or Micro Electro.
The trip planning software takes specific home delivery-related conditions into account. Sometimes two drivers are required to load and unload heavy goods such as washing machines. Goods have to be delivered to new customer addresses every day, which means that the planning process has to be optimised and adjusted to the daily delivery services.
"In-trip" shop pick-ups and deliveries are typical services in the household appliances sector. For example, a fridge is not available at the main depot, but at the shop where the customers ordered the fridge. In that case, PTV Intertour plans the pick up of the fridge at the outlet before it will be delivered to the customer.
Early notification of deliveries
After having planned the trips with the software the delivery information can be used for computer-based voice response systems or online services. They allow the customer to access details on date and time of delivery (e.g. between 10.00 and 12.00 a.m. or between 14.00 and 16.00 p.m.) one day before delivery.
Delivery of goods to sales outlets
The software also schedules the supply of goods from the main depot to the outlets. According to the individual user requirements those trips can either be scheduled for a certain period of time or they are flexibly allocated on a daily basis. The trip planning software supports both strategies.
More and more PTV Intertour users are also employing the software for scheduling their field technicians who have to fix technical problems or help the customers install their Internet connections. This usually belongs to a separate planning process.
