Penske Logistics, a third-party logistics provider (3PL), has been using CLASS software from Cirrus Logistics to model over 10 warehouse facilities throughout the past year. Realising that they needed a software tool to help them with warehouse layout design, Penske selected Cirrus Logistics to provide its CLASS modelling tool. Penske wanted to make operational improvements for its customers by testing its warehouse layouts and changes before any physical or financial investments were made.

Penske operates both single user and multi-user warehouses across a wide range of vertical markets from Automotive Manufacturing to Retail. Constantly needing to adapt to customers' needs including growing volumes, the business wanted to understand that the changes it recommended to operations would improve efficiency and lower costs, as well as provide factual data to achieve key stakeholder signoff to project proposals.

Furthermore, as the business was bringing in a new warehouse management system, this required new processes which could affect the operation and layout of the warehouse. It's critical for Penske to demonstrate that the processes have been tested and will provide the best solution for its customers; whether for a single user facility or a multiple use facility.

"We use CLASS for new site selections to test if our processes will work effectively and on budget for customers, as well as to continuously test different scenarios for existing customers. For example, what would happen to a facility if a customer grows by 10 per cent?" remarked Rob Clarijs, project manager at Penske Logistics. "CLASS provides us with the best scenario testing to ensure that our facilities work efficiently and cost-effectively; whilst showing the customer that our change recommendations are the right ones for their investment."

"We operate in a fiercely competitive market and must stay one step ahead of the game; offering tailored solutions that our customers can clearly see will work, is vital for retention and new growth," Clarijs continued. "One of the additional benefits of CLASS is that the design and process requirements are easy to present and talk through using the 2D and 3D visuals, with all levels of management. This saves us time in making decisions and our customers know that they are the right ones from the start."
