Portable box monitors safety of staff using own cars for work

With one in three road accidents involving a vehicle being driven for work, bosses need to ensure workers using their own cars are safe behind the wheel.

Thats according to Trimble, the leading telematics expert, whose tracking device can plug into a cars cigarette lighter.

The device assists bosses in protecting the safety of drivers who use their own cars for work, known in the industry as grey fleets.

In 2007 the Corporate Manslaughter Law was introduced meaning bosses can be held accountable for road accidents caused by employees whether they were using company cars or their own vehicles.

We have seen a huge growth in vehicle tracking in commercial fleets but companies are just as responsible for those using their own vehicles, says Andrew Yeoman, MD or Trimble.

Ensuring staff are using safe vehicles and driving safely is vital for companies to monitor.

The device will enable companies to see where the vehicle is and report on how it is being driven. It will flag up any serious speeding or harsh driving styles which could lead to accidents.

The law change is forcing some companies to insist their employees either use other forms of transport or go on to a company car scheme which can mean additional employee cost.

As well as checking licences and vehicles, bosses can now install portable tracking devices. It adds another degree of safety and can be used by employees while they drive for work but taken out when they drive for leisure. Its the perfect solution and offers minimum disruption for both the company and the employee.
