ASKO, the wholesaler part of a Norwegian industry leader, NorgesGruppen, has commissioned Swisslog to design and implement a new Central Distribution Centre (CDC). The value of this order, which Swisslog will carry out as general contractor, amounts to approx. MCHF 53 (MNOK 275).
The realisation of a CDC with a high degree of automation will enable ASKO to reduce tasks in its twelve existing regional distribution centres, resulting in lower total logistics costs. "We are pleased to implement this CDC for ASKO after having already been chosen for the realisation of ASKO's Regional Distribution Centre in Rogaland," Swisslog-CEO Remo Brunschwiler comments on this additional order. "This project allows us to prove once again our encompassing logistics expertise in retail, one of our core industries, to the benefit of the leading retailing group in Norway."
As general contractor, Swisslog will be responsible for the design and realisation of the Central Distribution Centre, which will be united with the existing Regional Distribution Centre located in Vestby, southeast of Oslo. The new CDC will comprise of a high-bay warehouse accommodating over 20 000 pallet locations and seven stacker cranes as well as of a miniload warehouse with ca. 120 000 locations and 40 miniload cranes. Swisslog will be in charge of integrating all warehouse and conveyor equipment and be responsible for the control systems. The warehouse management and co-ordination of the goods flows is provided for by Swisslog's warehouse management and material flow control systems which are interfaced with ASKO's existing ERP solution.
Within the overall project, a picking solution for tobacco and pharmaceuticals will be implemented in the first phase, followed by a picking solution for dry goods and alcoholic beverages in the second phase. The facility is planned to be operational by the end of 2010. After the CDC's start-up, Swisslog will maintain and support the day-to-day operations with an on-site team of nine service technicians.
