Consortium developing telematic solutions for European road transport enhanced safety and efficiency

NAVTEQ, a leading global provider of digital map data for location-based solutions and vehicle navigation, is part of the consortium driving the European project Com2React which is funded by the EC and co-ordinated by Motorola.  As the demand for traffic management solutions and safety related services increases, the EC is looking at significantly reducing traffic casualties and improving transport efficiency.   The Com2React project leverages the expertise and intelligence of leading technology companies, research centres and Universities to develop a new solution and standard for traffic management on a European scale.

The 13 members of the Com2React project consortium are: Motorola Israel, ARTTIC, Transver, Polytechnic University of Munich, Germany, INRIA, Ecole des Mines de Paris/ARMINES, PSA Peugeot Citroen, DMR Consulting, Intempora, JTMT, Sphericon, Telefnica and NAVTEQ.

NAVTEQs role in the project includes: delivery of  a digital map of the Munich test site, consultancy in the implementation of digital maps for Com2React applications such as "Congestion Hazard" and "Obstacles Hazard", and general advice  in the development of navigation system functions such as Transver for "Regional Routing at RCC" and Intempora for "Local Routing".   NAVTEQ is also providing its innovative ADASRP software which will be key to the Com2React In-Car system and incorporates the following software elements:

Digital map server (used by TransCAR component which hosts all in-car applications)

Electronic horizon  engine (critical for all hazard-related applications)

Vehicle positioning  engine (of course, critical for all in-car applications)

ADAS applications engine (processes the electronic horizon output data.)

Hosting of "Local Routing" applications (routing engine & user interface)

Hosting of user interface for all in-car applications

Com2React is a three-level system which exploits data collected through in-vehicle sensors to provide timely information about road and environment conditions and develop traffic forecasts and warnings. The system is based on virtual under-structures or sub-centres (VSC), a set of moving vehicles communicating with each other, used for local traffic control. A ramified structure allows VSC to collect, process and communicate in a complete and detailed way data obtained by monitoring real-time vehicles equipped with REACT sensors. Once collected, the data is transmitted to a central server located in a master vehicle in charge of the aggregation and analysis of local traffic and road conditions. Results are made available to drivers who receive automatic updates. At the same time, collected data is also sent to Regional Control Centres (RCC) where it is further processed to develop traffic forecasts and re-distributed regionally to drivers.

We are proud of our contribution to Com2React and work closely with a number of leading technology companies on this common project. Our vision to revolutionise the way people use maps today has become a reality and being part of this project funded by the EC confirms the value of our expertise and recognises the added value that NAVTEQ can bring to the telematics industry, commented Livin Quoidbach, NAVTEQ Vice President Government, Marketing and Strategy.  The Com2React system will increase the information flow to vehicles travelling the roads as well as the accuracy and quality of the transmitted data to provide improved monitoring of road transport across Europe.

In addition to Com2React, NAVTEQ plays an active role in other European projects including GST (IP), Speed Alert, Map&ADAS, Liaison (IP), SISTER (IP), COOPERS (IP), Safespot (IP), CIVIS (IP) and is also associate partner in the iNavsat and Eurely consortia for the Galileo project.
