DEMATIC WMS NOW SUPPORTS RFID DEPLOYMENT

Logistics automation specialist Dematic Limited has introduced a new module to its WMS portfolio that is designed to provide comprehensive support for RFID applications. The move reflects growing demand for RFID-based logistics solutions, and the critical role that is played by software in its successful deployment.

The new RFID module is an addition to Dematics existing, component-based WMS software. Key benefits of the companys RFID solutions include greater productivity as, compared to conventional barcode technology, much faster scanning rates can be achieved. Furthermore, Dematics yard management software functionality now includes the ability to track trailers and, more broadly, RFID achieves a high level of visibility throughout the supply chain, from manufacturing, through distribution hubs and into the retail environment. Improved asset tracking has also been identified as a significant advantage, with RFID facilitating greater control over items such as tote boxes and roll cages, which can represent a significant cost element in modern logistics operations.

Commenting on the introduction of the new software module, Jonathan Priestley, head of business development and marketing for northern Europe for Dematic, said: We are now beginning to see the growing interest in RFID translate into major contracts, particularly in the retail sector. Jonathan Priestlys comments follow the recent announcement by Dematic that it will offer WMS solutions as standalone packages. Previously, the company only supplied software as part of complete turnkey projects that also incorporated its automated handling technology.
