Exchanging experience at all levels

The international RFID/EPC global conference in Dsseldorf offers a richly varied programme

From 6 - 8 September 2006, the RFID/EPCglobal in Europe congress will be taking place in Dsseldorf. RFID experts from around the world will be gathering for discussions and share their expertise on radio frequency technology, its opportunities and putting it into practice.

The conference's comprehensive programme will explore five dimensions of the RFID world which are comprised of technical, practical and strategic components. The strategic dimension highlights the opportunities and visions for RFID and explains their significance for the economy and private business. The following individuals will be giving talks on this subject area: Zygmunt Mierdorf, METRO Group, Chris Adcock, EPCglobal and Dr Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, European Parliament. This topic will be placed into its context within the European market by Jrg Pretzel in his function as the Chairman of GS1 Europe.

The second dimensions deals with concrete examples of regional developments. In this regard, Kenneth D Porad of Boeing will be talking about the importance of RFID in the aerospace industry from a North American perspective, while Michel Eeckhout's presentation, "Fresh and fast - RFID at a Belgian retailer", will involve an example of the technology's implementation in central Europe. Sari Hkli of Stora Enso, a Finnish producer of packaging and also one of the largest in the world, will be dealing with a quite different sphere.

The third dimension illustrates the diversity of the sectors affected, showing how many industries are already dealing with this technology and putting it into practice. There will be reports from the consumer goods, textiles, pharmaceuticals, health, automotive and aerospace industries. This part of the programme will be characterised by the provision of answers regarding the positions of the individual industries and their future plans.

Concrete examples from actual practice make up the fourth dimension. Global players are not the only ones who are already working with RFID - medium-sized businesses are also employing this technology. Gtz Pfeifferling of Lemmi Fashion and Gregor Falke of Papstar will discuss their initial experiences in very different industries.

The foundation for all these applications is the technology itself. Where it stands, what the defined standards are capable of and the effects of RFID and EPC on existing systems are the content of the fifth dimension, technology. Dale Moberg of axway and John P Smith of ADT Security will talk about what the future holds.

This conference will be accompanied by the thematically related "RFID-City" exhibition. In addition to numerous renowned exhibitors from the industry, there will also be live applications in Innovations Park which demonstrate the wide range of possibilities offered by RFID - all in keeping with the motto: "See it, feel it, touch it and understand it!"

On 6 September, "Networking Night" at the Rheinterrassen will offer a perfect occasion for an exchange of opinions across national and industry boundaries in a relaxed atmosphere.
