This is our observation of Metrologic's latest hand held data collection devices, introduced at the recent Retail Solutions show (6-8 June, NEC, Birmingham, UK).
- Metrologic's OptimusR series of rugged hand held computers offers solutions for both real-time and batch data capture applications. The design of the devices is what you'd expect from a quality manufacturerergonomic, nice feel, good balance, big keys, integrated scanner and so on.
- The SP5650 OptimusRW offers wireless data communications that reportedly offers a 250-metre range from the host. Standard memory is 256 kB with option to increase to 2, 4 or 8 MB, and the Li-ion rechargeable battery reportedly delivers up to 16 hours of scanning.
- For batch applications you can use the SP5600 OptimusR. This has a direct connection option for rapid data upload and download, making a separate cradle unnecessary.
- With the batch version you get 2 MB of memory, which can be increased up to 8 MB if required. The Li-ion rechargeable battery gives up to 200 hours of scanning claims Metrologic.
- In common with the rest of the Optimus range of devices, these newcomers feature user-friendly navigation and software development tools. The Optimizer software reportedly allows users to create mobile computing applications quickly. And for users of the OptimusRW, the DataOptimizer software reportedly makes it easy to quickly configure existing databases for simplified long-range, real-time data communications.
- Commenting on the new products, Robert Hurt, marketing director, Metrologic EMEA, said: With the OptimusR line, Metrologic has developed a ruggedised set of mobile computers that are robust enough to withstand the rigours of their working environment. With an IP rating of 65, they can be used in the harshest settings, like dusty warehouses or outdoors at distribution centres.
