Telepartner has announced support for the Psion Teklogix WORKABOUT PRO handheld computer for use with its ServiceNet mobile field service solutions.

This rugged device has already been deployed with Telepartner client software and is in daily use by 750+ meter readers and meter operatives in EDF Energy field forces across London, SWEB and SEEBoard supply regions.

ServiceNet already supports standard, non-rugged PDA devices, such as the QTEK used by many mobile field workers but the WORKABOUT PRO is the first device in the rugged category to be certified for use with ServiceNet.

Telepartner carried out a rigorous evaluation of a number of handheld devices for the EDF Energy project. The WORKABOUT PROs came out on top, for its lightweight, rugged construction and ergonomics. There was particular praise for its bright touch sensitive screen, which can be viewed easily in daylight.  The WORKABOUT PRO meets all the technical specifications for ruggedness and offers a choice of operating system with Pocket PC used for this deployment.

When we evaluate devices for our customers, longevity, reliability and ease of use come high on our list of priorities, said Lindsay Kennedy, Telepartners Managing Director. Any device we use has to have reliable mobile comms and be able to run the Telepartner client software out of the box, something that is not guaranteed by the OS. In both instances the WORKABOUT PRO scored well, continued Kennedy.

ServiceNet is Telepartners functional environment for implementing mobile working applications and the underlying platform for all of Telepartners customers, all of whom carry out a mix of planned or reactive work or meter reading. The field terminals communicate via ServiceNet, over mobile networks, to receive job instructions, either as planned work schedules, reactive work or real time updates, received automatically without user intervention. Field management and control centre staff are able to view, all field based activity with up to the moment status (job delivery, job receipt, acceptance, cancellation, etc) in real time, via ServiceNets browser based Workflow Manager module. ServiceNet is available as a hosted subscription service or on a licensed basis with on site servers and direct network connections.
