Shire Pharmaceuticals, a global specialty pharmaceutical company, sought an RFID solution that would enable compliance with Wal-Mart requirements. The company selected Manhattan Associates RFID solutions. Manhattan Associates was ahead of the curve in being able to show us how its RFID solutions would meet our needs, said Mike Chapman, distribution manager, Shire Pharmaceuticals. With the help of Manhattan Associates project team, the implementation was smooth and came in under budget. Shire is poised and ready to meet upcoming retail requirements.

In Europe, RFID is being adopted at a slower pace than in the US, although, European RFID market value is expected to increase exponentially in the next 5 years. Steve Smith, vice president, EMEA at Manhattan Associates explained, "Adoption of RFID in Europe is currently not driven by a major retailer requesting RFID compliance. Instead, companies in Europe are looking at RFID to increase brand protection and improve supply chain efficiency. Convincing the European market of the benefits of RFID is not easy, however, there is a definite interest from multinational companies in running pilot projects. There is particularly strong interest in RFID from the pharmaceutical industry, high value item manufacturers, the textile and fashion industry, and logistics service providers."

Manhattan Associates introduced its RFID solutions in 2003, based upon technology and industry needs. Today, its RFID offerings include Integration Platform for RFID, EPC Manager, Enterprise EPC Manager and RFID Services as well as its award winning RFID in a Box offering which includes hardware, software, tags, readers and other peripherals. These comprehensive, EPC-compliant solutions have been part of both targeted and enterprise-wide RFID initiatives for companies looking to address compliance requirements as well as those looking to improve the overall efficiency of their supply chain. Many companies have completed implementation and are addressing trading partner requirements and government and consumer demand for improved product tracking, traceability and labor productivity.

RFID is playing an increasingly integral part in the evolving global supply chain, said Eddie Capel, Manhattan Associates senior vice president, product management. It can help to solve issues in the supply chain industry todaycustomer safety, expiration times, security and fraud.
