Innovate Logistics has unveiled a 6m high-tech development of its storage and distribution centre in Dudley, which will help Corus to provide faster and more accurate deliveries to its UK customers.
The investment, including a building extension, new handling equipment, locomotives, climate control and sophisticated computer systems will make the operation the largest and most advanced rail-linked steel-handling terminal in the UK right in the heart of the Midlands.
Innovate, one of the UKs leading providers of temperature controlled storage and distribution, has worked in partnership with Corus, one of the worlds leading steel producers, since 1987 providing warehouse and logistics services at the Dudley site. This underlines the strength of the relationship between the two companies.
The investment also brings with it benefits for the local community. Not only is it expected that at least 15 new jobs will be created as a result of the expansion, but the knock-on effect on the local economy will be positive. The development is also in line with government initiatives to reduce the amount of freight traveling on the roads resulting in a practical contribution to solving environmental issues and traffic congestion.
Stephen Dargavel, Managing Director of parent company Innovate Holdings explained: Innovates investment in the Dudley site highlights our commitment to Corus and enables us to form a great force within the UK steel industry. Redeveloping the Round Oak Rail site represents a major event in our history and demonstrates the level of service we give to our valued customers.
In addition to upgrading and extending the existing facility, we are installing the latest technology and communication systems to ensure a streamlined throughput. Getting things right is critical, especially in logistics and we believe the centre will set a new standard for distribution centres in the UK.
Jeff Pritchard, Manager Delivery Operations at Corus agreed: The ongoing partnership with Innovate delivers enormous benefits to both parties. Corus recognises that forging long-term relationships with the best suppliers is paramount to ensuring the quality and consistency of our products and services for our customers who also form an integral part of the UKs industrial economy.
